Mail-in or in person
You can mail in an adult renewal (PC7) if you are 18 or over and your current passport:
- was issued when you were 16 or older, on or after 1 January 2006, with at least 2 years' validity;
- shows your current name, date of birth, place of birth and gender;
- has not been reported lost, stolen or cancelled.
Children up to 15 who have held an Australian passport can apply by mail on form PC8. First-time child applications, applicants aged 16 or 17 and all other passport applications must be lodged in person by appointment (booked through Setmore).
- Complete the form online, print it on plain white A4 paper, sign in black ink and lodge it within 6 months.
- Two identical photos taken within the last 6 months; do not staple or glue them to the form. Do not send your current passport with a PC7.
- PC8: guarantor signs section 11 and the back of one photo; everyone with parental responsibility signs consent in section 15 before a witness; children 10 and over sign.
- Ho Chi Minh City: include the Credit Card Deduction Authority form; mail-in payments are in AUD. Hanoi emails payment instructions once the application is complete.
- New passports are returned by EMS to the address on the form.

Timeframes and your current passport
- Allow at least 6 weeks after payment and a complete application. Overseas applications are not eligible for faster processing.
- Your current passport is generally cancelled when you apply to renew overseas; ask the mission first if you need it while you wait. Ho Chi Minh City cancels the old passport 30 days after the new one arrives at the Consulate.
- Remaining validity does not carry over to the new passport.
